How To Clean Suede

How to Clean Suede | Sandy's CleanersSource

Suede is a wonderful material for winter wear because it helps keep us warm and cozy. However, it can be a pain if you happen to get a stain on it. Because suede is really tricky to get clean, you need to be extra careful. Check out these tips for keeping your suede clothes and shoes looking brand new!

Read the product label.

Not all clothing that is labeled “suede” is actually made out of suede. There are many different types, so it’s important to know what material you’re dealing with. Luckily, if yours isn’t the real deal, faux suede is much easier to clean than authentic suede.

Don’t let wet stains soak into the fabric.

Suede is one of those materials that you just can’t get wet. If a wet substance drops onto your clothing, immediately blot it up with a towel. If the liquid gets below the surface, the suede will be much more difficult to clean.

Rub an eraser against dry stains.

You can easily remove dried stains by using the eraser of a pencil or a stiff paint brush against it. However, this method typically works just for surface stains.

Bring your suede to Sandy’s.

By having your suede professionally dry cleaned, you don’t run the risk of ruining the material or causing stains to set in even further. We can guarantee that your suede clothing will come out looking as good as new.

Why You Should Preserve Your Wedding Dress

Why You Should Preserve Your Wedding Dress | Sandy's Cleaners

Your wedding dress is sentimental. It’s the dress that you spent months–maybe even your entire life–searching for and the dress that you walked down the aisle in to marry the love of your life. But after the wedding, what do you do with the dress? Although you probably can’t wear it again every weekend, there are other ways to keep it around–preserve your wedding dress!

At Sandy’s, we are able to professionally clean and preserve your wedding dress so that it looks just like new, even when you open it up again in twenty years. If you need any further convincing, here are a few reasons that you should consider saving and preserving your dress.

Wedding dresses are expensive.

Your wedding dress probably cost at least a quarter of your entire wedding budget. That’s not an amount of money that is easy to part with. Keep it with you by holding onto your beautiful wedding dress.

Getting your dress professionally preserved will keep it from aging.

Even stains in your dress that aren’t visible now can eventually start to yellow. By having your dress professionally cleaned and preserved, all stains will be removed and your dress will be put into a special box that will keep it just like new.

Pass your dress down to other women in your family.

Was your dress too beautiful to only be worn once? Imagine how beautiful your younger sister, little cousin, or even your daughter will look in it, as well.

Keep the dress as an heirloom.

Create a family tradition by keeping your dress preserved and passing it down among family members. It may be strange to think about now, but your great-great-grandchildren will love to hear about your wedding and see your wedding dress.

Wear your dress again for an anniversary party.

Could you imagine spending your 5th, 10th, maybe even 25th anniversary in the very dress that you first married your husband in? You don’t have to wear it only once–keep it around for those momentous occasions.

We offer professional wedding dress cleaning and preservation at each of our seven locations. Give us a call today at 843-797-8411 or come visit us at any of our locations to learn more about our services! Hope to see you soon!

How to Care for Your Winter Coats

How to Care for Your Winter Coats

How to Care for Your Winter Coats - Sandy's Cleaners

Summer is quickly coming to an end and before we know it, we’ll be scouring attics and garages in search of those tubs filled to the brim with bulky winter clothes. Winter coats are some of our most expensive clothing items, so it’s important to keep them in good shape so that they’ll last many winters.

Here are a few tips on keeping your winter wear looking brand new.

1. Don’t hang up your sweaters.
Many sweaters are made out of delicate materials and hanging them up by the shoulders will stretch them out. The last thing you want is to wear a sweater with pointy shoulders because it spent a little too much time hanging in the closet. Fold your sweaters and keep them in a drawer or on a shelf.

2. Use a coat brush to remove excess lint from wool coats.
Try to stay away from lint rollers with it comes to your coats and invest in a brush meant specifically for that task.

3. Dry your down jackets with tennis balls.
This will help make sure that the feathers are distributed evenly throughout.

4. Hang your winter clothes with cedar hangers.
Hate the smell of mothballs? (Don’t we all?) Use cedar hangers instead to keep moths from attacking your winter clothes.

5. Have your coats dry cleaned.
The best way to get your wool coats cleaned is to have them dry cleaned. You can do some spot cleaning on your own, but for a full cleaning, bring your winter coats to us at Sandy’s and we’ll make sure they’re as good as new.

Our seven locations are conveniently placed throughout Charleston, Goose Creek, Summerville, and Daniel Island. Give us a call today at 843-797-8411 or, come visit us at any of our locations to learn more about our services! Hope to see you soon!

Summer Detox: Getting your closet ready for fall

Spring Cleaning: an event that comes around every year that is similar to making a New Year’s Resolution. You promise yourself that you will actually do it this year, and then come up with 100 excuses not to follow through.

If this was you last year, don’t worry! We’ve got some great tips to help you clean out your closet to prep for the fall. Instead of spring cleaning, we’ll call it summer detoxing. Decluttering this summer will help clear your mind and create some space!

Shoes

Shoes are probably the hardest thing to get rid of because finding the perfect shoe is difficult. Look at your shoes and say to yourself, “When was the last time I wore these?” This will help narrow down your choices. There are countless charities that donate shoes to those in need all around the world! Transform your summer cleaning from a chore to charity.

Jewelry

Quality over quantity people! Sometimes we cling to a cheap pair of $5 earrings that we “wear all the time,” but cheap jewelry can easily be replaced when needed. If you don’t wear it often, toss it in the “No Pile”. Don’t wait to find the perfect time to wear a piece of jewelry, because that time will (more than likely) never come. Old costume jewelry can be used for crafts as well!

Handbags

Handbags and old purses don’t have to be used as an accessory on your trip to the mall! Hang your old handbags up on a hook to be a more appealing way to store things in the house that you use often (plastic bags, flashlights, pens, ect.)

After going through and donating, getting rid of, or keeping what’s in your closet, make sure you take the time to store it away in an organized fashion. If there is anything that you decide to keep that is stained or wrinkled, let us freshen it up for you! Come by one of our seven locations conveniently placed throughout Charleston, Goose Creek, Summerville, and Daniel Island. Give us a call today at 843-797-8411 or, come visit us at any of our locations to learn more about our services! Hope to see you soon!

Beat The Heat: Humidity and Your Clothes

Summer in the South: a season full of beach days, cookouts, great friends, and…. humidity.

You’ve probably noticed that the air here in Charleston is not only hot, but thick and sticky. The southern summer sun brings tan skin and sunshine-filled days, but good ole humidity has been bringing frizzy hairdos to the Lowcountry since before we can remember. The humidity and heat unfortunately can do some damage to your clothes if not cared for properly. We want to give you tips on how to prevent damage so you can continue to enjoy the summer without suffering any losses

.

How Does Humidity Ruin Clothes?

First, let’s talk about how damage from humidity happens. Humidity brings moisture to the air. Mold and mildew thrive in oxygen and moisture filled environments. Since there’s not a really great chance you’ll be getting rid of oxygen, your best bet to avoid damage is to try to get rid of the moisture.

Care for Your Closet

A moist closet is a goldmine to mildew and mold. To prevent moisture damage to your clothes, invest in a dehumidifier to put in your closet. The money saved from undamaged clothes will far surpass the money spent on the dehumidifier. If you do not want to buy a dehumidifier, consider heating your closet. Cool air can help keep the air moist.

How to Remove Mold and Mildew

Sometimes, regardless of how hard you try, the moisture in the Lowcountry’s air is able to damage your clothes. If this happens and you notice it quickly, you can try caring for it at home — make sure you use protective gloves and a mask. Remove all loose mold and soak the garment in cold water and a mild detergent for at least an hour. Then allow it to sun dry completely before putting it back in your closet.

If this method does not seem to work for you, bring it into Sandy’s and we’lll work some magic to restore your clothing!

Summer in Charleston is so wonderful — don’t let humidity ruin your clothes OR your fun!

History of Dry Cleaning

Sandy’s Cleaners has been proudly serving the Lowcountry since 1998, but did you know that the dry cleaning process has been around for nearly 2,000 years? In an earlier blog, we explained the current dry cleaning process, and now we thought it’d be interesting to give you a brief history of our profession.

Ancient Dry Cleaning

Ancient Rome

In 79 A.D., the Romans would wash their togas in a mixture of lye, ammonia, and a type of clay. This efficiently removed dirt, sweat, and grease. They would use urine from farm animals to create the ammonia, but don’t worry, we no longer use that practice!

18th and 19th Centuries

Jump forward 1,500 years or so. Clothes are obviously made out of more complex materials than they were in ancient Rome, which requires a more in-depth method of cleaning. Clothes are no longer cleaned with cow urine and clay – but instead, cleaned with harsh chemicals like gasoline and turpentine. We can only imagine how horribly everyone must have smelled!

In 1845, Jean-Baptiste Jolly spilled kerosene on a dirty tablecloth. When the kerosene dried, the stain had disappeared. He then begins a business cleaning clothes without water and the term “dry cleaning” is coined.

Today

We no longer use harsh and flammable chemicals such as gasoline and ammonia. If you read our blog on the dry cleaning process, you will be able to grasp a full understanding of how we, at Sandy’s, are able to safely and efficiently clean your garments.

How to Care For 3 Common Stains

There are a lot of things that can go wrong with your clothes. Spills and stains can ruin a perfect outfit – especially when you don’t take care of it properly. The three most common stains are ink, blood, and grease. At Sandy’s Cleaners, we see a lot of stained clothes that have been cleaned improperly, making them much more difficult to treat. Here are some tips on what to do right when these stains happen.

Grease Stain Fixed at Sandy's Cleaners

Ink

An ink stain is a very common stain, and we see it often. A lot of garments come to our stores with ink stains that are improperly cared for. The first thing to remember is not to rub the stain! It’s almost a natural reaction to grab a cloth and rub a stain with water, but this actually allows the ink to further set in. Instead, put a dab of rubbing alcohol on the stain and let it sink in before washing it. If you don’t have rubbing alcohol on hand, hand sanitizer or hair spray will work as well.

Blood

Nosebleeds, papercuts, and a scraped knee on the playground are inevitable. However, this doesn’t have to be the end of the road for your favorite clothes! Once the accident happens, put cold water on it as soon as possible. Make sure the water is cold!!!! Larger stains will need to be submerged in a sink or bowl. Once you’ve rinsed the spot for a minute or two, put a little soap on the stain, and then rub that in as well. Try to get the garment cleaned as soon as you can. As always, Sandy’s is glad to help!

Grease

Grease is a tough stain to remove, but not impossible. A lot of grease stains occur at home while cooking or eating, so the first thing to do is take the article of clothing off and care for it. Grease is one of the stains that’s more difficult to remove once time has passed. Put laundry detergent, stain remover, or a powdery substance (baby powder or cornstarch), on the stain and wash or dry clean it ASAP.

Accidents happen! Here at Sandy’s, we’re happy to help you with those accidents and ensure that your clothes stay beautiful and clean. Now, with seven locations throughout Charleston, Goose Creek, Summerville, and Daniel Island, Sandy’s Cleaners is truly your neighborhood dry cleaner.
